Urban Debate League Students Conduct Special Q&A for PBS Doc

New PBS Documentary Shines Light on Mental Illness and Incarceration

April 14, 2020 – In preparation for the 2020-21 National Policy Debate Topic of criminal justice reform, students from the Washington Urban Debate League (WUDL), along with Miami, Chicago, L.A. and Detroit leagues, took part in a special viewing of the new PBS documentary The Definition of Insanity. After the viewing, WUDL hosted a virtual Q&A session with a main subject of the film, Hon. Steven Leifman of the 11th Circuit in Miami.

The Definition of Insanity, which follows “a team of dedicated public servants working through the courts to steer people with mental illness — as their court cases hang in the balance — on a path from incarceration to recovery” was made possible through the support of the Matthew Harris Ornstein Memorial Foundation. The Ornstein Foundation is also an incredible champion of urban debate and a sponsor of WUDL.
